Correlating Granule Surface Structure Morphology and Process Conditions in Fluidized Bed Layering Spray Granulation

A workflow for developing a multidimensional, linear correlation between the process conditions during fluidized bed spray granulation and surface morphology of resulting granules is presented. Spray coating experiments with Cellets®500 particles sodium benzoate solution were performed in lab-scale varying liquid rate, fluidization air flow temperature, temperature atomization pressure. To characterize structure, roughness coated was quantified using confocal laser-scanning microscopy. The correlated to conditions, rigorously analyzed importance co-linearities individual parameters principal component analysis. strongly dependent on rate solution, pressure at nozzle. In general, wet large droplets low initial velocity favor formation rough while dry fine high result smooth compact layer.
